Early Modern University Textbooks: How to Gain Hegemony
On the basis of the corpus of all early modern printed editions of commentaries on the Sphere of Sacrobosco, the lecture shows how to reconstruct the transformation process—and its mechanisms—undergone by the treatise, and so to explore the evolutionary path, between the fifteenth and the seventeenth centuries, of the scientific system pivoted around cosmological knowledge. In particular, it will be shown how the shared scientific identity of Europe was achieved by means of a process that brought Wittenberg and its textbook production to conquer a position of hegemony. The sources are analyzed on three levels: text, images, and tables. From a methodological point of view the lecture will also show how data are extracted by means of machine learning and analyzed by means of an approach derived from the physics of the complex systems and network theory.
Matteo Valleriani is Research Group Leader in Dept. I, Honorary Professor at the Technische Universität Berlin, Professor for Special Appointments at the Faculty of Humanities at Tel Aviv University, and Principal Investigator of the Project “Images and Configurations in Corpora of University Textbooks” at the Berlin Center for Machine Learning.
In his research, he investigates processes of 1) emergence of scientific knowledge in relation to its practical, social, and institutional dimensions, and 2) homogenization of scientific knowledge in the framework of Cultural Heritage Studies.
Centering on cosmological knowledge, Matteo Valleriani’s current major research project is concerned with the evolution of the scientific knowledge system and with the establishment of a shared scientific identity in Europe in the period between the thirteenth and the seventeenth centuries. In the frame of this project he also co-develops and implements multi-layered network models (sphaera.mpiwg-berlin.mpg.de).

I am currently an NWO VENI postdoctoral researcher at the Huygens ING, an institute of the Dutch Academy of Arts and Sciences in Amsterdam. My current project Innovating Knowledge running until 2021 focuses on early medieval intellectual networks and the role of Isidore of Seville's Etymologies, the most important medieval encyclopedia, as a receptacle and vehicle of innovation in this period. I have began exploring this subject in 2017-18 as a Mellon Fellow at the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies in Toronto.
I received a PhD from Utrecht University in 2016 for my research on annotation symbols in early medieval Western manuscripts.
